Q&A: How do you survive not skiing in the off season?
This is a very easy question to answer: we don’t.
Jeff is going on 32 months straight of skiing. It’s gotta be at least one day, even in the slim pickings of August or September.
We can’t just hang them up in April and wait until November comes around again.
Scoff! Unthinkable! 😉
Because around here, although the skiing isn’t necessarily GOOD in July, it is doable. There is snow to be found, if you want to find it. So why wouldn’t we?
The pack is heavy, the hike is long, the whole project is definitely a bit obsessive, but no doubt about it: the hunt is a beautiful adventure.
A reliable favourite for early summer skiing is in that famous sub-range of the Purcells filled with granite spires, the Bugaboos.
If you need to train your climbing, but also want to slide on some snow, it’s the most epic two-for-one around.
Moving through mountainous terrain on summer snow can be a whole different animal. The hazards, the exposure, the gear and the timing.
The break from the sun is short and the distances can be large.
And even though the skiing doesn’t compare to the perfect deep powder turns that are on offer all winter long, withdrawal helps with perspective.
It’s. Still. Skiing.
In the off season, the mantra is: never easy, always worth it.
It just makes powder skiing feel that much more incredible when it returns.
So that’s our thing. We chase winter like many people chase the heat. I bet you feel the pull too.
